Components

  • A game board with 40 spaces featuring locations from the Harry Potter series, such as Hogwarts, Gringotts, and the Ministry of Magic.
  • 28 title deed cards, one for each property on the board.
  • 16 Chance cards and 16 Community Chest cards, with events and situations inspired by the Harry Potter series, such as receiving a letter from Hogwarts, escaping from Azkaban, or facing Voldemort.
  • A pack of Monopoly money, with the denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 500 Galleons.
  • 32 houses and 12 hotels are used to improve the properties and increase the rent.
  • 6 tokens, which are used to move around the board. The tokens are all based on objects from the Harry Potter series, such as the Hogwarts Express, the Golden Snitch, the Sorting Hat, the Elder Wand, the Triwizard Cup, and the Marauder’s Map.
  • 2 dice, which are used to determine how many spaces to move.

Setup

To set up the game, follow these steps:

  • Place the game board on a flat surface and have each player choose a token. Place the tokens on the “Go” space.
  • Shuffle the Chance and Community Chest cards and place them face down on their respective spaces on the board.
  • Give each player $1,500 in Monopoly money. The money should be divided as follows: 2 x $500, 4 x $100, 1 x $50, 1 x $20, 2 x $10, 1 x $5, and 5 x $1.
  • Choose a player to be the banker. The banker manages the money, properties, houses, and hotels.
  • The banker should also give each player a “Spells and Potions” card. This card lists the spells and potions the player can use during the game. The spells and potions are:
  • Alohomora: This spell allows you to unlock any property on the board and buy it or rent it without paying the owner.
  • Accio: This spell allows you to take any property from another player and add it to your own.
  • Expelliarmus: This spell allows you to disarm another player and prevent them from using their spells and potions for one turn.
  • Obliviate: This spell allows you to erase the memory of another player and make them forget that they own a property. You can then buy it or rent it without paying them.
  • Polyjuice Potion: This potion allows you to switch places with another player and use their properties, money, spells, and potions for one turn.
  • Felix Felicis: This potion gives you good luck and allows you to roll the dice again or choose any number you want.
  • Veritaserum: This potion forces another player to tell the truth and reveal their spells and potions to you. You can then use one of them for yourself.

How To Play Harry Potter Monopoly

On your turn, you roll the dice and move your token to the number of spaces shown on the dice. You can also use one of your spells or potions before or after you roll the dice, but only once per turn. Depending on the space you land on, you may have to do one of the following:

  • Buy a property: If you land on an unowned property, you can buy it from the bank for the price on the title deed card. You then receive the title deed card and place it face up before you. You can also use the “Alohomora” or the “Accio” spell to buy or take a property from another player.
  • Pay rent: If you land on a property that another player owns, you must pay the rent. The amount of rent depends on whether the property is part of a color set and has any houses or hotels on it. The rent is shown on the title deed card. You can also use the “Obliviate” spell to make the owner forget that they own the property and avoid paying rent.
  • Draw a card: If you land on a Chance or Community Chest space, draw the top card from the corresponding deck and follow its instructions. Some cards may give you money, some may take money away, and some may move you to another space on the board. You can also use the “Expelliarmus” spell to prevent another player from drawing a card or the “Veritaserum” potion to make them reveal their card to you.
  • Pay a fee: If you land on the Income Tax or the Luxury Tax space, you must pay the amount shown on the space to the bank. You can also use the “Felix Felicis” potion to avoid paying the fee or the “Polyjuice Potion” to switch places with another player and make them pay the price instead.
  • Go to jail: If you land on the Go to Jail space or roll three doubles in a row, you have to go to jails. You can also be sent to prison by a Chance or Community Chest card or by the “Avada Kedavra” spell, a secret attack that can only be used once per game by the player with the Elder Wand token. To exit jail, you have three options:
  • Pay $50 to the bank on your next turn and move the number of spaces shown on the dice.
  • Use the “Get Out of Jail Free” card, which you can get from a Chance or Community Chest card or another player by trading or using the “Accio” spell.
  • Roll a double on the dice on your next turn and move the number of spaces shown on the dice. If you fail to roll a double after three tries, you have to pay $50 to the bank and move the number of spaces shown on the dice.
  • Free parking: If you land on the Free Parking space, you can rest and do nothing. You can also use the “Polyjuice Potion” to switch places with another player and take their turn instead.
  • You can improve your properties by buying houses and hotels from the bank. To buy a house, you must own all the properties of the same colour. You can buy up to four houses per property, and the price of each house is shown on the title deed card.
  • To buy a hotel, you must own four houses on each property of the same color. You can then trade the four houses for one hotel, and the hotel’s price is also shown on the title deed card. Homes and hotels increase the rent you can charge to other players who land on your properties.
  • You can also trade properties, money, spells, potions, and cards with other players anytime during the game. You can make any deal that you want as long as both parties agree to it. You can also use the “Accio” spell to take a property, a while, a potion, or a card from another player without their consent.

Winning

The Harry Potter Monopoly edition game ends when one player has gone bankrupt. This means they need more money and properties to sell or mortgage. The last player standing is the winner. You can set a time limit and see who has the most money and properties at the end of the time.
