Monopoly Go Rules

The rules of Monopoly Go are similar to the original Monopoly but with some differences. The game is played in turns, each consisting of two phases: the Roll Phase and the Buy Phase.

Roll Phase In the Roll Phase, the player rolls two regular dice, and the speed die. The player then moves their token to the total number of spaces shown on the dice. If a player lands on a property or an action space, they must follow the instructions on the area. Players must follow the particular rules if they land in a corner space.

Monopoly Go Buy Phase

In the Buy Phase, the player can buy the property they landed on. If they choose not to buy it, the property goes up for auction, and any player can bid. The highest bidder wins the property and pays the bank the amount they bid. If no one bids on the property, it remains unowned.

Monopoly Go Properties

Properties are the primary source of income and expense in Monopoly Go. Each property has a name, a colour, and a price. The price is the money a player must pay to buy the property from the bank. The price is also the amount of money a player must pay to another player if they land on their property.

There are 28 properties in Monopoly Go, divided into 8 color groups. Each color group has 2 or 3 properties. The properties are:

  • Brown: Mediterranean Avenue and Baltic Avenue
  • Light Blue: Oriental Avenue, Vermont Avenue, and Connecticut Avenue
  • Pink: St. Charles Place, States Avenue, and Virginia Avenue
  • Orange: St. James Place, Tennessee Avenue, and New York Avenue
  • Red: Kentucky Avenue, Indiana Avenue, and Illinois Avenue
  • Yellow: Atlantic Avenue, Ventnor Avenue, and Marvin Gardens
  • Green: Pacific Avenue, North Carolina Avenue, and Pennsylvania Avenue
  • Dark Blue: Park Place and Boardwalk

There are also 4 railroads and 2 utilities in Monopoly Go. The railroads are Reading Railroad, Pennsylvania Railroad, B&O Railroad, and Short Line. The utilities are Electric Company and Water Works.

Rent is the money a player must pay another player if they land on their property. The amount of rent depends on whether the property is part of a color group and whether it has any houses or hotels.

The rent for each property is listed on its title deed, which is a card that shows the property’s name, color, price, and rent. The title deed also shows the property’s cost of building houses and hotels.

A player can build houses and hotels on their properties once they own all of the properties in a color group. For example, if a player owns all three properties in the light blue group, they can start building houses and hotels. The cost of each home or hotel is listed on the title deed, and the player must pay the bank the listed amount to build them.

A player can build up to four houses on each property and then upgrade to a hotel. A hotel replaces the four houses on the property and increases the rent significantly. A player can only build one hotel per property.

Players must follow the even building rule, meaning they must build or sell houses and hotels evenly across their properties. For example, a player can’t make a second house on one property until they have created one house on each property in the color group.

A player can sell houses and hotels back to the bank for half their value if they need money or want to downgrade their properties. A player can also mortgage their properties to the bank for the amount shown on the back of the title deed. A player can’t collect rent from mortgaged properties and must pay 10% interest to unmortgage them.

Monopoly Go Action Spaces

Action spaces are spaces that have a remarkable effect on the game. There are 12 action spaces in Monopoly Go, and they are:

  • Chance: If a player lands on a Chance space, they must draw the top card from the Chance deck and follow its instructions. These cards can have various effects, such as giving money, moving to a different space, or paying a fine. After following the Monopoly Go instructions on the card, the player places it at the bottom of the deck and turns over to the next card. If the deck runs out of cards, shuffle the discard pile and start a new deck.
  • Community Chest: If a player lands on a Community Chest space, they must draw the top card from the Community Chest deck and follow its instructions. These cards are similar to the Chance cards but usually have more positive effects. After following the instructions on the card, the player places it at the bottom of the deck and turns over the next card. If the deck runs out of cards, shuffle the discard pile and start a new deck.
  • Income Tax: If a player lands on the Income Tax space, they must pay $200 to the bank.
  • Luxury Tax: If a player lands on the Luxury Tax space, they must pay $100 to the bank.
  • Go to Jail: If a player lands on the Go to Jail space, they must move their token to the Jail space and end their turn. They can’t move until they roll a double or pay $50 to get out. They can try to roll a double once per turn, and if they succeed, they move out of jail and the number of spaces shown on the dice.
  • If they fail, they can either pay $50 to get out or stay in jail until their next turn. While in jail, they can still collect rent from their properties and use cards to move out of jail. However, they can’t buy or sell properties, houses, hotels, or trade with other players.
  • Free Parking: Nothing happens if a player lands on the Free Parking space. They can rest on this space until their next turn.

Monopoly Go Corner Spaces

Corner spaces are spaces that mark the four corners of the game board. They have special rules that affect the game. The corner spaces are:

  • Go: This is the starting space of the game. Each time players pass or land on this space, they collect $200 from the bank.
  • Jail: This is where players go when they are sent to prison. Players can’t move from this space until they roll a double or pay $50 to get out. They can also use cards to get out of jail. While in prison, they can still collect rent from their properties but can’t buy or sell properties, houses, hotels, or trade with other players.
  • Just Visiting: This is where players who are not in jail can rest around the board. Nothing happens in this space.
  • Free Parking: This is the space where players can rest and relax. Nothing happens in this space.
  • Go to Jail: This is where players are sent to jail. They must move their token to the Jail space and end their turn.
  • They can’t move until they roll a double or pay $50 to get out. They can also use cards to get out of jail. While in jail, they can still collect rent from their properties but can’t buy or sell properties, houses, hotels, or trade with other players.

Winning the Game of Monopoly Go

The game ends when all but one player has gone bankrupt. Players go bankrupt when they owe more money than they have or can raise by selling or mortgaging their properties. When a player goes bankrupt, they must give all their money, properties, houses, hotels, and cards to the player who bankrupted them. If the bank bankrupts a player, their properties are returned to the bank, and their money and cards are removed from the game. The last player standing is declared the winner.
